Bloody Hill Villages - Rivar Ferguson-Mayer
Yarra Valley Vintage 2023 started colder and wetter in the Spring which meant a slight delay to the start of the season, with an increased threat of disease putting some pressure on growers. The rain continued through to December and once the new year rolled around the vineyards started to dry out. Ripening started slow, as the summer was cooler than average. Slow ripening allowed the grape to develop plenty of flavour. Arriving first was Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir in good volumes and ripeness. Things turned and autumn cooled, bringing rain. This delayed the picking of both Shiraz and Cabernet. "Got us a bit worried but they turned out great in the end" - River Mayer.
All Bloody Hill Villages wines are single vineyard, handpicked, spontaneously fermented dry, spend 6 months in seasoned hogshead barrels and bottled unfiltered. This is minimal intervention style.
