“In 2021 Charles van Canneyt has made 90 barrels, compared to a more typical 230 in 2022. It makes a difference! He did not protect the reds against the frost, believing them not to be sufficiently advanced, and he now both prunes later and ploughs later to reduce risk. Post-frost, he came through relatively unscathed as there enough windows for successful organic spray treatments. Some sorting of the grapes was needed and ripening could be variable. Picking began on 22nd September, though there were not enough grapes to make wither Nuits-St-Georges Bas de Combe or Vosne-Romanée Malconsorts. He did not leave the wines for long in the vats as, unexpectedly, analysis showed a higher index of tannins in 2021 than 2020. The proportion of new wood is fairly similar to normal. Charles will rack very soon and bottle at the end of the year or January/February, which is earlier than usual.”
