Apart from being photogenic, and physically demanding to prune, harvest and generally take care of, the wine that is produced from this daunting site is always terrific. If you aren’t familiar with it, it is laid across the gentle slope past the winery overlooking the moorabool valley. It’s barely an arms width between rows, and most of the work has to be undertaken while hunched. It is no friend to tall people, or particularly wide people either. Thankfully through struggle comes more complex wine. Tout Pres always seems more delayed in how it reveals itself. This shyness most obvious in the nose, not least as that’s the first interaction you have with it. The wine always sits a little lower in the glass than the others, it feels just out of each. The palate gives more immediate notes of peppery spice, not pepper so much, but a prickly, tighter spice with a little more attack. There is a dried earthy note here, some cola, dark cocoa and black cherries. It feels almost brittle at times, certainly in its youth, but you wouldn’t mistake that for delicacy. It’s hard to describe it, but the wine is confident and deliberate, but there is something about this wine that is fragile too. The chalky texture of this wine, paired with the crisp yet fine acid, couldn’t be better. I imagine is this part of the wine gives that sense of fragility, it feels like the wine snaps on your tongue. I expect a level of quality that is outrageously high and over time, you get used to them. I try to sit back and remember what it feels like to try these for the first time. I can write a standard note about petals and acid and texture, but it doesn’t really tell you what it feels like to drink it. BEN KNIGHT, CRITIC

Farming: Sustainable

Vegan Friendly: Yes

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0569/5756/6999/files/unnamed-5_eb42b581-40b2-474b-9c5e-a5e7b9405bef.png?v=1721350229
by-farr-shiraz-2022
By Farr Shiraz 2024

Region: Geelong

Variety: Shiraz

What's in the glass: Shiraz fruit comes from the original By Farr vineyard, planted in 1994. It lies on a north-facing slope, and the red volcanic soil has a base of limestone with deep-set sandstone. This is always so, so good. It’s complex which I love, as so often this grape is one dimensional. There is more than a note of ripe fruit, there is graphite, black olives, it feels silky yet there is a note of ocean spray, a faint yet lovely salinity, then follows the spice. There is so much going on in this wine, and I know it’s a tired saying, but this is undoubtedly a Pinot drinker’s Shiraz, and by that I mean it is endlessly interesting, I’m not saying that it is light. The texture is perfect in that it has intensity without being flabby, and I think this is too often overlooked. Shiraz need not be a fruit bomb as it masks all the good parts this grape has to offer. Call it Rhone-like if
you want, I know that will draw criticism, but few Australian Shiraz come close to that level of finesse, texture and savoriness. The transformation from sweet one dimensional juice, to multi faceted wine is nothing short of alchemy, or so it seems. I know it sounds creepy, but I just rolled this wine around in my mouth. Drinking it, almost unnecessary, but ultimately, too hard to deny. The nose of this wine is endlessly complex, as the previous wines were, but it is more fully resolved. In that I mean it is riper, less herbal, softer and more fully formed. The wine makes you \\ \\ salivate, and is the very type of wine that helps define vinous descriptors like “peacocks tail”. In the abstract sense, these words, like so many others, seem like flummery, but the description comes from the sense of a broadening and greater intricacy, and indeed volume, that the wine exhibits. It is how the wine delivers more beauty towards the “end” of the palate, as it is swallowed. The RP is seamless. Straight from the box, at “room” temp and straight from the fridge at “way too cold” temperature, or so I thought.. This type of polar experience in termsof temperature usually highlights a wines imperfection. The colder option is usually the most telling, as insipid wine offers nothing but wetness when too cold. The GC, as expected, is anything but insipid and delighted at both ends of the temperature spectrum. This wine was surprisingly delicious straight from the fridge. Likewise, straight out of the box the wine was also wonderful. It showed me the complexity of the wine and the depth of flavour too. A wine balanced with acidity and richness. There are notes of lemon and vanilla custard, chantilly cream and dry tropical fruits. Despite the two notes of dairy, there is nothing garish about the wine, nothing buttery or overblown. And, whilst it is full of flavour, so much of that generosity is driven by ripe fruit and beautifully handled acidity. The GC chardonnay is a wine that offers Chardonnay expression with flavour, and it does so unapologetically. There is, thankfully, a way for these top end wines to taste of the grape that makes them, without the baggage of winemaker artifice. I’ve spoken before of the hand of Farr, and the ease with which these wines dance so intricately and beautifully with the appearance of ease. It is this simple elegance that is the skill, and the intricate complexity, that doesn’t appear to be so, that is the joy. The palate is more giving showing orchard fruit and tart citrus, which provides acidity and structure in the wine before leaving a moreish dry finish. BEN KNIGHT, WINE CRITIC

Farming: Sustainable

Vegan Friendly: Yes

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0569/5756/6999/files/unnamed_a59c53f6-77ae-4078-af40-2790314d426c.png?v=1773357197
by-farr-irrewarra-chardonnay-2025
By Farr Irrewarra Chardonnay 2025

Region: Geelong

Variety: Chardonnay

What's in the glass: notes to follow.

Farming: Sustainable

Vegan Friendly: Yes

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0569/5756/6999/files/unnamed-1_1080x1080_9e4313d0-e8eb-4d38-b73e-6f35c94b2135.webp?v=1777602719
by-farr-irrewarra-pinot-noir-2024
By Farr Irrewarra Pinot Noir 2024

Region: Geelong

Variety: Pinot Noir

What's in the glass: notes to follow.

Farming: Sustainable

Vegan Friendly: Yes

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0569/5756/6999/files/unnamed-1_1080x1080_ec8fbfe7-2e18-48a5-b517-1336eb5281af.webp?v=1777603755
by-farr-viognier-2025
By Farr Viognier 2025

Region: Geeong

Variety: Viognier

What's in the glass: The By Farr Viognier consists of a blend of fruit from two vineyards. They have decided to pick the fruit earlier in the past few years in order to retain its natural acidity, ensuring they maintain varietal character and create a more delicate and refined wine. Am I changing, or is it something else? I feel drawn to the Viognier. I know the story is all Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at By Farr, but my word, if this wine isn’t consistently pure joy and vinous perfection. Viognier has a gift to blow out, become rich and a little overbearing, but here, in Bannockburn, a place familiar with sunlight, where Viognier’s gift could easily shine, they hold the reins tightly. A thoroughbred, poised, rippling and ready to excite. (I know how weird that sounds, just bare with me) So what does that mean exactly? In my head, it means I can tell the wine is made from the Viognier grape, but it’s refreshing enough for me to want to drink more without it being too rich or cloying. The tasting note would read something like this. A note of apricot, not jam,
but fresh and ripe off the tree, still warm from the last rays of the sun. I think if you can feel on your skin, a memory of what a wine smells like, it’s already done its job. At least for me it has. A stony, crunchy acidity, that tastes like white pebbles being rubbed together in your hands in a dry river bed, feels like. Can you hear it? Can you feel it too? The texture of the wine fits easily into the framework of modern Australian Chardonnay, but those exotic fruit notes set it apart. For those of you who have the luxury of cellaring wine, or more importantly, have greater self control than I do, a couple of years in the cellar will bring back even more memories. BEN KNIGHT, CRITIC

Farming: Sustainable

Vegan Friendly: Yes

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0569/5756/6999/files/unnamed-5_1080x1080_0e5e3113-7082-4618-975b-67501eeaef2f.webp?v=1782607897
